The theory of image file types - brief, to the point and not too boring!

Jpeg and Gif are the two image formats most readily supported by browers.
Other image formats require additional software in order to be viewed.

Gifs
*Gifs have good compression of file sizes with minimum loss of quality.
*They reduce the file size of your images for faster downloading times.
*They use 8 bits mapped to a colour palette containing 256 colours
*Gifs are suitable for icons, logos etc. but NOT for photo-realistic images.

Jpegs
*Jpegs have excellent compression of file sizes with loss of quality.
*They too reduce the file size of your images for faster downloading times.
*They use 24bits mapped to tens of thousands of colours
*Which means that they are ideally suited for photo-realistic images.

To summarise, use gifs for icons and jpegs for photo-realistic images.
